The key to good health is a healthy digestive system. Health directly benefits athletic performance in pretty much all sports as well as helping out with acne. In addition, being able to properly digest your food and assimilate all of the nutrients possible helps you out massively with muscle growth and recovery.
What to do?
There are many articles out there which explain various ways in which we can help to support our digestive system. However i am going to go through the things that i have done that have helped me the most in terms of digestion.
Cutting out Dairy and Grains:
This follows a more primal/paleo eating style that i generally follow. There are multiple health detriments to both dairy and grains. Dairy is processed so badly and the animals that it comes from are so unhealthy that not only does it contain lactose which is very hard to digest, it also contains a large amount of dead white blood cells.
You know why they say breast is best - because it contains many white blood cells that your body can use to fight infection, however milk is pastured so these white blood cells are dead. Dead white blood cells are called pus. Grim.
There are many substances in grains that have a detrimental effect on our system including gluten, phytates and lectin. Please follow the links to find out more!
However, i have found that if i cut out dairy and gluten my digestion is so much smoother, which helps with acne and means i can eat more for the gym. NomNomNom...
Increasing stomach acid and food combining:
This is a big one for bodybuilding. Protein (especially meat), requires an acidic stomach to be broken down. Lots of people who start to eat lots of meat and high protein foods to get big start to develop acid reflux. This can be an absolute ball-ache and is something that i still have room for improvement on. Low stomach acid causes food to ferment in the stomach after being sat there for long periods without being broken down. This causes gas in the stomach which eventually can cause some of the contents to spills out, giving that filthy sick taste in the mouth. Grim.
So to make sure i break down my food properly so i get the maximum nutrients possible and avoid acid reflux i take a HCL supplement with Pepsin with every high protein meal. I will also marinate the meat before-hand in Braggs apple cider vinegar to pre-digest and break down the meat, it also makes it lusciously tender. I will also take aloe vera juice from time to time if i need it.
Obviously you do not have to go to such great lengths unless your having problems but the apple cider vinegar i suggest to everyone due to its great health benefits, it also gives me lots of energy. Make sure its Braggs though, its pretty much the best.

If your going to invest in a product to help your digestion, Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar has to be the one. It is a probiotic fermented drink containing loads of natural enzymes with loads of health benefits; it was used by Hippocrates himself! It is also highly alkalising and detoxifying to the body. I have a tablespoon or two of this with each meal as a dressing or in a half glass of water.
Aloe Vera Juice is an extremely effective healer of the gut. I usually have a quarter cap-full of this with any meal particularly large or heavy in meat.
Betaine HCl with pepsin is very effective in helping to digest meat and high protein meals. This allows for a larger amount of food to be eaten at greater frequency as well as breaking down the food properly so you can absorb as much of it as possible. HCl is naturally produced in the stomach along with pepsin, but most people do not have as high stomach acid as is required. I have one tablet of this before meals containing meat and/or high protein.
Food combining also helps me a lot. Separating carbs from meat and green veggies helps digestion loads and helps aid fat loss in many people.
And thats what i do!
